- If you have a SCSI chip earlier than -08(like the -04 I had) you may have
- problems with external SCSI devices. This is exactly what happened to me
- when I added an external CD-ROM to my 3000. Every time I booted with the
- CD-ROM on, the machine would eventually hang after a random amount of time.
- Sometimes 10 seconds after powering up, sometimes 30 minutes. I swapped
- the SCSI chip for an -08 one, and it has never happened again. Since then
- I have added a Zip drive and I still have no problems. Since you haven't
- had any problems, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you add a CD-ROM and
- start having problems, then you would want to spend the $30 for a new chip.
- BTW, it seems as though CD-ROMS ARE more likely to give errors with the -04
- chip than other external SCSI devices, but I don't know why...
